There's a lot to learn in the Game of Arbor, and the Ancients are the most complex aspect of the game, as they change the way the core rules work for different characters.

Instead of choosing an Ancient, you can choose to play Dormant Mode.
In this mode, rolling the Ancient Blessing symbol in your Dawn Phase simply adds 1 to your rolled Manna for that turn.
